Are You Ready for the Second Half of Hurricane Season in Fort Walton Beach?
9/5/2023 (Permalink)
Our local Fort Walton Beach team is trained and certified to restore storm-damaged properties quickly and efficiently. It only takes one hurricane to cause widespread devastation, so although this year’s hurricane season is predicted to be near-normal, it is imperative that residents understand the risk and heed warnings issued by state and local authorities.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the most active part of hurricane season in the Fort Walton Beach area runs from August to October. During this period, sea surface temperatures along the Emerald Coast are at their warmest, and atmospheric conditions are favorable for tropical storm development, bringing a higher potential for hurricane activity in our region.
The NOAA continues to improve hurricane observing systems and has two new projects underway this season.
Small aircraft drone systems: The deployment of additional Saildrones, underwater gliders, and WindBorne global sounding balloons are new technologies used to advance current knowledge of hurricanes and improve forecast accuracy.
Tropical Atmosphere Ocean buoy array upgrade: This system is used to forecast El Nino and La Nina conditions that influence hurricane activity. It is being improved to provide additional capabilities including instrument updates, more strategic placement of buoys, and higher frequency observations.
